Southern Tamil Nadu has strong sunshine and plenty of land that is dry, rocky or uneconomical to farm. Solar farming — installing a ground-mounted solar plant on that land — can turn it into a long-term source of income or power savings.
What is solar farming?
A solar farm is a ground-mounted solar plant, usually from about 100 kW to several megawatts. The power is either used on site (for a mill, cold storage or factory) or sold to the grid under an approved scheme or agreement.
Agrivoltaics is a variation where panels are raised high enough to keep farming underneath — useful for shade-tolerant crops, vegetables, fodder grass or grazing.
Is your land suitable?
- Flat or gently sloping, shade-free land — roughly 4–5 acres per MW for a conventional plant.
- Close to a TNPDCL / TANTRANSCO substation with spare capacity, since evacuation lines are a major cost.
- Clear title and the right land-use permissions.
- Good road access for construction and cleaning.
Land around the drier parts of Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli and Thoothukudi districts is often a good fit. Paddy and banana land in the wetter parts of our district is usually better kept for crops or used for agrivoltaics.
Schemes to know about
The central PM-KUSUM scheme has supported farmers to set up small grid-connected solar plants on their land (Component A) and to solarise pumps (Components B and C). Its status, windows and implementing agencies in Tamil Nadu change, so check the official PM-KUSUM portal or ask us for the current position before planning around it.
