An on-grid solar system is only as good as its grid connection. In Tamil Nadu that connection is handled by TNPDCL (Tamil Nadu Power Distribution Corporation). Here is a plain-language guide to how the meter, the paperwork and your bill change after you go solar.
What is a net meter?
A net meter (bi-directional meter) records two numbers: the units you import from the grid and the units your solar system exports. Your bill is worked out from these readings according to the rules TNPDCL applies to your connection category.
Your existing meter is replaced with a bi-directional meter as part of the solar connection process.
What changes on your bill
Most of the solar you produce during the day is used directly in your home, so it never shows up as an import. That alone pushes many families into a lower slab of the bi-monthly domestic tariff, where the per-unit rate is much lower.

Application steps
- Register on the national rooftop solar portal (pmsuryaghar.gov.in) with your TNPDCL consumer number.
- Apply for feasibility; TNPDCL checks your connected load and the local transformer.
- Choose a registered vendor and install the system once feasibility is approved.
- Submit the installation details; TNPDCL inspects and installs the net meter.
- After commissioning, upload the documents to claim the subsidy.

Tips for a smooth approval
- Make sure the name on the electricity bill matches the property owner applying for subsidy.
- Keep the sanctioned load in mind — a system larger than your sanctioned load may need a load enhancement first.
- Clear any pending dues on the service connection before applying.
